Frampton Co presents Plans, an exhibition of works by artist Maud Bryt on view July 31 through August 28, 2026 at Exhibition The Barn. The opening event takes place July 31, 6–8 pm.
Legendary 19th century garden designer Gertrude Jekyll once said that “Planting is like painting a landscape with living things.”
Maud Bryt uses color like pretend architecture. Working in the persona of a fictional architect, possibly a charmingly incompetent one, maybe just a bad architect in her last decades of life, artist Maud Bryt makes drawings and paintings that evoke architectural and landscape plans. Imprecise, inconsequential, a dream of places and spaces never built, but to be roamed nonetheless, she lays out a world of plans for imaginary clients.
“When you go down the path there, you’ll feel the grass under your feet and then the sun will catch you just as you dive into that pool– you see?”
“But– but I don’t even know where this part of the land is.”
“That’s okay, it’s a good plan, a very good plan. Just follow my line here.”
“I see. Okay.”
Accompanying the Plans paintings are plaster sculptures which stand in for the imaginary clients’ personas– yelling here, breathing there– and jewelry to give as apology gifts, each evoking a small personal thought or memory.
Plans is on view July 31 through August 28, 2026 at Exhibition The Barn at 141 Maple Lane in Bridgehampton. The Barn is open to the public this summer Wednesday-Friday, 11am – 5pm, and weekends by appointment (contact: exhibition@framptonco.com).
About Maud Bryt
Born in New York City in 1965, Maud grew up in New York and New Mexico. She received an AB cum laude in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard University in 1987 and an MFA from New York Studio School in 2014 where she studied with Bruce Gagnier, Garth Evans, Graham Nickson, John Lees, and others. She has exhibited paintings and sculpture in the USA, UK, and France, and has works in private collections. Her current work is based on her perception of form, light, color, and the relationship between things, and between people. She lives and works in New York NY and East Hampton NY with her husband, with frequent trips to visit family in New Mexico.
